Description - Description - Fortification Plans:
Allain Manesson Mallet a master of mathematics Military Engineer and Geographer to King Louis XIV published what was to become some of the most sought after studies of Maps, Fortifications and the Art of War of the 17-18th centuries.
Published in Paris in 1683-4 this page from the Atlas is in the tome Ou L, Art de la Guerre. This whole section of the atlas was dedicated to the Mathematics and design for building fortifications to repel would-be attackers. Some of the pages show the walls being built, some the designs for the walls and some the actual battle trying to breach the walls. These pages, whilst not maps, (plans) in the normal sense were published and included in one of Mallets miniature atlases and are therefore today quite difficult to obtain. Although later, but faded colouring this image would frame as a miniature very well.
